New York – The section of highway where an accident sent seven members of a Bronx family flying over a guardrail and plummeting to their deaths has narrow lanes, steep hills, tight turns, inadequate guardrails and no breakdown lane Where to buy windows 7 key, an auto safety group said Monday.

The Bronx River Parkway “lacks modern transportation engineering features,” said Robert Sinclair, spokesman for the American Automobile Association’s New York City affiliate. He said it was conceived in 1907 and opened in 1925 as “the first limited access multilane highway in the U.S.”

Three sections of the parkway in the Bronx, including one at or near the accident site, are on the state Transportation Department’s 5 Percent List, a federally mandated report of locations “exhibiting the most severe highway safety needs.”

The driver, Maria Gonzalez, clipped a highway divider and damaged a tire Sunday afternoon before her SUV plunged off a highway and six stories down into a ravine on the grounds of the Bronx Zoo, killing three generations of a family, including three children, police said.

Juan Gonzalez, the driver’s husband Windows 7 Activation Key, blamed the state, at least in part, for the crash.

“He says it’s very careless of the state to let that happen,” a relative said, translating Gonzalez’s Spanish at a funeral home. “There’s been several incidents before this. Accidents such as this and they haven’t done anything to prevent this.”

The state Department of Transportation’s only comment was an email message that said, “We are working closely with all agencies involved to determine the cause of this tragic accident.”

On the highway, just before the accident site, is a sign that warns of “Limited Sight Distance” on the six-lane parkway, which runs north-south between the south Bronx and central Westchester County.

The accident was the second in the past year where a car fell off the same stretch of the parkway; the earlier accident wasn’t fatal. In 2006, six people were killed on the parkway when one car crossed the median into oncoming traffic.

Police said Maria Gonzalez of the Bronx was driving south at 68 mph when she bumped a concrete barrier separating the north- and southbound lanes. With one tire damaged, her Honda Pilot skittered across three lanes of traffic, hit a 2-foot-high concrete curb and went airborne, clearing a 4-foot-tall guardrail.

“It is very strange that there is a curb there,” Sinclair said. “You don’t put curbs on high-speed roadways because they can serve as launching pads, which appears to be what happened here. A big Honda Pilot flew over a 4-foot guardrail.”

He said the guardrail should be higher on an elevated roadway.

Gonzalez was driving well above the posted 50 mph limit, but speeding is common at that point and she may have been simply keeping up with traffic, said New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne. He said there was no evidence Gonzalez was texting, on a phone or had been drinking. Toxicology tests are pending.

“There’s no evidence of a mechanical failure,” he added.

The medical examiner’s office on Monday ruled the deaths accidental. Autopsies showed that all seven died from blunt force trauma.

The NYPD’s accident investigation squad found “yaw marks” on the road, he said. He said they indicate a vehicle going perpendicular to traffic.

All the victims were wearing seat belts.

They were identified as Jacob Nunez, 85, and Ana Julia Martinez, 81, who were visiting from the Dominican Republic; their daughters Buy windows 7 key, Gonzalez, 45, and Maria Nunez, 39, and three grandchildren. The children were Jocelyn Gonzalez, 10, the daughter of the driver, and Niely Rosario, 7, and Marly Rosario, 3, both daughters of Nunez.

At the Gonzalez home on Monday, a cousin of the women, Isabel Morel, said the grandparents’ bodies were being returned to the Dominican Republic. A funeral for the mothers and their children is scheduled for Friday morning.

Two flower bouquets and seven tall religious candles lined the sidewalk near the stoop of the house. Photographs of Jocelyn and Marly sat behind a grate of a windowsill, one in pink overalls and white blouse, the other sporting a pixie haircut.

“This was supposed to be a time of great happiness,” Morel said, adding that the SUV had just picked up the grandparents at Maria Nunez’s home to take them to the Gonzalez home for a family party.

In the Dominican Republic community of Manuel Bueno, where the elderly couple lived, their son Antonio Nunez said, “The whole town is really sad.”

He said several of his sisters had pooled their money to buy their parents’ airline tickets.

Maria Nunez’s husband, Juan Ramon Rosario, said he was working at a car wash when he learned of the tragedy.

“It’s terrible for him and the whole family,” said Andres Fulgencio, a cousin translating for the 34-year-old father of two. “Right now he can’t think. He can’t feel.”

Juan Gonzalez, a livery cab driver, “feels destroyed,” a translating relative said. Gonzalez said there was nothing wrong with the vehicle or his wife on Sunday morning.

“I never expected that we would go through a moment like this but we have to keep going,” he said. He said he would have to work harder because his wife had just taken a maintenance job at Fordham University to help pay for their son’s college education.

The wreck was the deadliest in New York City since the driver of a tour bus returning from a Connecticut casino in March 2011 lost control and slammed into a pole that sheared the bus nearly end to end, killing 14 passengers.

Relatives said a fund was being set up for donations toward funeral expenses. Fernando Mateo, president of the New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers, contributed $1,000 and said the costs could total $100,000.

U.S. wants Gupta insider trading jury to hear Raja

May 17th, 2012

NEW YORK, May 1, 2012 (Reuters) — Prosecutors want the jury in May’s insider trading trial of former Goldman Sachs director Rajat Gupta to hear three secretly-recorded phone conversations of Galleon Group hedge fund founder Raj Rajaratnam as evidence of the purported conspiracy between them.

In a pre-trial filing in Manhattan federal court on Monday night, the government said two of Rajaratnam’s conversations with his principal trader and another with Galleon’s then portfolio manager showed Gupta leaked Goldman board secrets at the height of the financial crisis in 2008. The calls were recorded by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

“Rajaratnam’s statements in these three recorded conversations are essential evidence of the insider trading charges against Gupta in this case,” prosecutors Reed Brodsky and Richard Tarlowe wrote to U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff.

The government said Gupta had passed the Goldman information to Rajaratnam in earlier phone calls that were not part of the FBI’s wiretap surveillance of Rajaratnam, who is serving an 11-year prison term, the longest handed down for insider trading Setting Tattoo Machine, after his conviction at trial a year ago.

A spokeswoman for Gupta’s lawyer, Gary Naftalis Cheap Tattoo Machine, declined to comment on the government’s motion. Defense lawyers have until May 11 to respond. The trial is scheduled to start on May 21.

Gupta Good Tattoo Machines, also a former global head of McKinsey & Co, is the highest-ranking corporate executive to be charged in a broad U.S. crackdown on insider trading at hedge funds in recent years. Dozens of people have pleaded guilty or been convicted at trial.

Gupta is accused of providing inside tips about Goldman and Procter & Gamble board meetings to Rajaratnam in 2007 and 2008. Rajaratnam was recorded by the FBI discussing the Goldman information with trader Ian Horowitz and portfolio manager David Lau.

The indictment said Gupta gave Rajaratnam advance knowledge of a $5 billion investment in Goldman by Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc at the height of the 2008 financial crisis, Goldman’s surprise fourth-quarter 2008 loss, and P&G’s quarterly earnings in late January 2009.

Monday’s government motion argued that since there were no recordings of phone conversations between Gupta and Rajaratnam on September 23 and on October 23, 2008 and no other participants, “Rajaratnam’s statements in the subsequent wiretapped calls with Horowitz and Lau provide indispensable evidence” that Gupta tipped Rajaratnam and that Rajaratnam purchased and sold Goldman stock on September 23 and October 24 on the basis of those tips by Gupta.

The former Goldman and Procter & Gamble director has denied the charges, which include five counts of securities fraud and one count of conspiracy. Gupta says he lost money investing with Rajaratnam and that as many as four other Goldman personnel could have been tipping Galleon. Gupta could face up to 25 years in prison if convicted of securities fraud.

Horowitz has been described in the case as an unindicted co-conspirator. A lawyer for Horowitz could not be reached to comment.

The case is USA v Gupta, U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, No. 11-907.

I May Not Be Their Birth Mother, But I Take Care o

May 17th, 2012

As evidenced by the abundance of flower and jewelry commercials, Mother’s Day is Sunday. I have often wondered how I would celebrate if I were a mother.

But, in a way, I am.

As a “House Mama” at the Ronald McDonald House of Memphis, I am the mother to 51 children who are fighting cancer while being treated at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Now some would ask, “Does this really make you a mother?” If a mother is someone with natural offspring then the answer is no. But if a mother is someone to whom children look to hear their stories, wipe their tears, and give them hugs, then the answer is a resounding yes.

I started volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House of Memphis shortly after it opened in 1991. As a volunteer Tattoo Gun Needles, I was able to meet many families who were fighting for their child’s life.

I will never forget one of the first families I met. Their 2-year-old son was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. Their son, along with their 5-year-old daughter, spent the better part of nine months staying at the Ronald McDonald House of Memphis. This family tried to maintain a sense of “normalcy,” when in fact, their lives had been turned upside down. I will never forget this little boy’s love for life and his smile. At 2 years old, he loved golf and would play outside in the yard for hours using his custom fit golf club. When he was at his sickest, I would spend time with him in the hospital so that his parents could spend time with their daughter.

Unfortunately, their son did not survive. But to this day, I am still friends with his family.

Some of my friends ask me how I do it. “Isn’t it sad, Sherri?” they ask me. I tell them it is really not sad at all. Every day, we have the most fun we can have while we are here. While we cannot cure our children, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital has proven evidence that staying at the Ronald McDonald House improves a child’s adherence to complicated treatment plans and communication with the child’s medical team, which can help them heal faster and go back to being kids.

I have been amazed throughout the years by the dedication and love that exists at Ronald McDonald House. Laughter is the universal language and that was never more evident when we had two little girls staying at the House. One spoke English Handmade Tattoo Machines, but the other did not. That did not stop them from playing and laughing together, though. I will never forget one afternoon when I heard the giggles coming from the front of the building. I got up to investigate where the giggles were coming from. I found these two girls in the lobby having a silly string fight. Their laughter brought more families out of their rooms. Before long, there was an all-out silly string war happening, and everyone was laughing.

I am just one of many “House Mama’s” around the world that helps to make up the system of support that Ronald McDonald House Charities provides to families with sick children. RMHC has a long history of taking care of families and children Good Tattoo Ink, one family and one child at a time. RMHC provides a stable and supportive environment for families to stay together as they try to maintain some sense of “normalcy” when their lives have been turned upside down.

Today, RMHC is composed of 315 Ronald McDonald Houses in 31 countries, 184 Ronald McDonald Family Rooms inside hospitals in 19 countries and 45 Ronald McDonald Care Mobiles in eight countries. We all work together to strengthen families during their most challenging times.

Working for Ronald McDonald House Charities of Memphis is by far the most rewarding job that I have ever had.

It’s not often we are given the opportunity to do something we are passionate about. I have been given that opportunity on a daily basis, and if I could do it for free I would. When I finally hit that winning lottery ticket that is just what will happen.

If you are a mother, grandmother or aunt with a healthy child, give thanks on this Mother’s Day and everyday for their health. Life can change in an instant, and it is my sincere hope that you never have to stay at a Ronald McDonald House. But be assured that if you do, there will be a House Mama there to greet you at the door, and to offer you a hug and a listening ear.

Eliot Shvitzer

May 15th, 2012

Bloggers bask in the irony of New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s buffeting by another tough attorney general—his own. Also, good athletic news in Iraq precipitates more of the same old misery.

Eliot Shvitzer: The tough prosecutor who headed to Albany seven months ago with state ethics reform as his primary goal is now accused of unscrupulous—and possibly career-fatal—behavior himself. Aides to New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer, a Democrat, allegedly used state police to monitor the travel schedule of State Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno, a Republican. (The aides were looking for dirt on their boss’s political rival relating to his use of state aircraft.) The real Shakespearean angle on this story, however, is that Spitzer’s bulldog reputation as New York’s former attorney general has now been taken up by his own top lawyer, Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, who’s leading the investigation into just how high up this executive stink travels.

New York magazine, which ran a cover story last week on Spitzer, is all over the growing scandal at its Daily Intelligencer blog: “The main takeaway from the first days of what now promises to be a long, hard slog for the governor is how strangely unprepared the Spitzer machine seems for dealing with an internal crisis. This is, of course, ironic on several levels: As the crusading A.G., Spitzer has thrown many a Wall Street firm into the same kind of cooperation-pledging, aide-dismissing, ass-covering tizzy his administration appears to be experiencing right now.”

“My gosh. If Spitzer were a Republican, people would be making comparisons to Nixon and calling for impeachment,” writesconservative law professor (and longtime Spitzer antagonist) Professor Bainbridge. “(Actually, Spitzer reminds me a lot of Nixon, but that’s a story for another day.)”

Libertarian Radley Balko, aka The Agitator, says the governor is a victim of self-made circumstance: “Even he didn’t know, isn’t this the same guy who wants corporate executives held criminally liable for the mistakes of their underlings, even if they had no knowledge of those mistakes? Isn’t this the guy who wanted to make not knowing about those mistakes a crime in and of itself?”

And who is most likely to be basking in ” Spitzerfreude”? At The Wall Street Journal’s Law Blog, Nathan Koppel makes a list: “Dick Grasso: The former New York Stock Exchange chief, whose $187.5 million pay package was challenged by then AG Spitzer in 2004. … Insurers: Spitzer launched an investigation into alleged bid-rigging between brokers and insurers. … Mutual Fund Industry: Spitzer’s investigation of ‘marketing timing,’ in which fund companies allowed investors to buy fund shares after the market closed Tattoo Supplies, netted more than $4 billion in fines, penalties and fee cuts for investors.”

Greg at conservative Rhymes with Right sees the New York Times’ coverage of the scandal as a transparent attempt to save the Spitzer administration. Noting that two of the governor’s top aides have refused to cooperate with the attorney general’s investigation, Greg writes: “I’m curious — had Scooter Libby taken such a course, would the New York Times have found that acceptable? If the Bush Administration chose to follow such a path in any investigation, would the New York Times have let that matter pass? hardly — but since Spitzer is a friendly Democrat, what do you expect. Biased reporting, double standards — that’s the New York Times.”

Kicking and screaming: Iraq’s soccer team won the Asian Cup semifinals Wednesday in what should have been an unpunctuated moment of joy for the besieged country. Sadly, as Iraqis took to the streets to celebrate the victory, suicide bombers attacked, killing 50 and wounding more than 100.

Shourin Roy at SoccerBlog.com notes that “[s]occer as a uniting symbol for Iraqis, as a sport that rallies nationalism, is thus antithetical to the insurgents goal of unleashing sectarian forces. The inevitability of Iraqi soccer being targeted. … No less than Ammo Baba, an Iraqi soccer icon, and the manager of the Iraqi team in its golden years of the 80s Tattoo Supplies, was spared as he was assaulted and robbed at home by Iraqi insurgents.”

Is there anything more American than taking someone else’s hard work and claiming it for our own? Probably not. Maybe it’s some sort of collective synaptic impulses left over from our former masters in the empire or some sort of instinctive will to survive at all costs brought about by our ancestors being made to carve out a life on an uncivilized continent. Whatever the reason Buy Herve Leger gown, it doesn’t seem like the impulse will let up any time soon. The recent Chrysler recent Red, White, and Blue soaked World Cup ad is a perfect example. As Consumer Reports has noted Cheap Marc Jacobs Dresses, with Canada owning a full 10 percent of the company and Italian carmaker Fiat holding the reigns to another 20 percent, the company isn’t as ‘apple pie’ as it would have buyers believe.

Then there’s the annoying fact that the Challenger itself is built off of a modified Mercedes-Benz platform and constructed in Ontario, Canada. Of course Herve Leger v neck sale, the same sort of criticism can be leveled at Chrysler’s new Jeep Grand Cherokee ads, which Chloe Dresses sale, while built in the U.S. Chloe Dresses sale, also rides on a Benz-derived platform and also shares Italian and Canadian ownership ties.

The Turbo-est Taxes

May 13th, 2012

“I’ve had it. I’m moving someplace where the taxes are easier.” Fake Dewitt Watches

In her annual report to Congress delivered Wednesday, the Internal Revenue Service’s ombudswoman urged lawmakers to simplify the federal tax code. Even if Congress listens to her advice Wholesale Replica Swiss Movement Watches, overhauling our tax system for the first time since 1986 could take years. In the meantime, where should you move to avoid a tax-season headache?

The Maldives—particularly if you own a business. To determine the relative arduousness of various taxation systems, researchers from the World Bank and PricewaterhouseCoopers dreamt up a hypothetical, but very specific, company—a ceramic flowerpot manufacturer that owns one building, two plots of land, and one truck; has 60 employees; and pays 50 percent of its net profits to its owners, among other assumptions—and brought it through the taxation process of 183 nations and territories. It would take the imaginary flowerpot manufacturer’s accountant less than an hour to comply with the Maldives’ tax code. Compare that with Brazil, the lowest-ranking country, where the company would have to spend 2,600 person-hours—about 108 days of nonstop work, or 325 eight-hour shifts—to meet the requirements. That makes filing taxes in Belarus Replica Glashutte Watches, the second lowest, seem like a cakewalk—at 1,080 hours. The United States, where it would take the flowerpot company 187 hours to comply, ranks 66th from the top by this measure. *

What if you don’t own a company? Unfortunately, it’s tougher to find easily-comparable data for taxes on individuals. But the Maldives, which has no income, sales, property Concord Replica Watches, or capital-gains taxes, would still rank near the top—as would notorious tax havens like the Cayman Islands and Andorra. (Countries without these taxes can fund their governments by charging companies an annual licensing fee.)

Tax reformers frequently attack the length of our tax code. Olson’s report notes that the code climbed from 1.4 million words to 3.8 million words between 2001 and last February. Since 1913, the code’s physical volume has increased from 400 pages to about 70,000 pages. But length is a poor proxy for simplicity. Almost nobody besides engineers at TurboTax actually needs to read the whole code. Much of it consists of so-called “tax expenditures”—spending programs that Congress works into the code—most of which individually apply to very few people or industries. *

Those who research the so-called “compliance burden” of tax codes prefer an alternative measure for complexity: How long it takes people to prepare, fill out Where buy best Replica Dewitt Watches, and submit their taxes. It’s tougher to measure this for individuals than for businesses, since people rarely keep track of this data themselves, but the IRS estimates (PDF) that individuals take an average of 12 hours to file their taxes: five hours for record-keeping, two hours for planning, three hours to fill out forms, one hour to submit the forms, and two hours for miscellaneous activities.
